Mauricio Kagel (Buenos Aires, 1931) is self-taught as a composer. In 1957 Kagel travelled to Germany on a DAAD student grant, settled in Cologne, and became involved in the local contemporary music scene as a member of the so-called 'second generation' of Darmstadt composers.

Most of Kagel's works have their structural basis in subversive rhetorical gestures such as paradox, disjunction and irony. Sound materials often involve unusual or exotic instruments or regular instruments used in unusual ways. The concept of 'instrumental theatre' is central to many of Kagel's later works. Although it is possible to trace broad influences from European and American avant-garde ideas, few works are developed from any clear source other than his own imagination.

One of the most important of contemporary composers, Kagel's elaborate imagination, bizarre humour and ability to play with almost any idea or system has brought powerful and unexpected drama to the stage and concert hall. (Paul Attinelo).

Mauricio Kagel (Buenos Aires, 1931) is een autodidacte componist. In 1957 vertrok Kagel met een beurs naar Duitsland. Hij vestigde zich in Keulen en werd deel van de plaatselijke hedendaagse muziekscene als een van de zogenaamde ‘tweedegeneratie’-Darmstadtcomponisten.

Aan de meeste van Kagels werken liggen ontwrichtende retorische figuren als de paradox, de disjunctie of de ironie ten grondslag. Als geluidsbronnen gebruikt hij vaak ongebruikelijke en ‘exotische’ instrumenten of conventionele instrumenten die op onconventionele wijze worden bespeeld. Het concept ‘instrumentaal theater’ staat centraal in veel van Kagels latere werk. Er zijn veel invloeden uit de Europese en Amerikaanse avant-garde in zijn composities aan te wijzen, maar slechts weinig van zijn stukken komen voort uit andere bronnen dan zijn eigen verbeelding.

Kagel is een van de belangrijkste hedendaagse componisten. Zijn uitgebreide verbeeldingskracht, zijn excentrieke gevoel voor humor en zijn vermogen te spelen met bijna ieder idee of systeem hebben sterk en verrassend drama opgeleverd voor het toneel en de concertzaal. (Paul Attinelo)
